Ride Notice: High Country Weekend Camp – Tolmie – Labour Day Weekend

Where: Tolmie Recreation Reserve. Tolmie is 24 kms from Mansfield (best access road is the Mansfield- Whitfield Road, bitumen all the way). The reserve has plenty of room to put up yards, plenty of water for the horses. There are hot showers and a kitchen /mess room which we can share with any other campers that may be there. The kitchen has jug/ kettle/ microwave and small fridge. And Tolmie has mobile coverage. There is only a pub at Tolmie which will have live music and pub meals and a courtesy bus which would pick us up . (pub is 3 kms from the reserve). The North East can be pretty hot but Tolmie is generally 5 degrees cooler than Mansfield and most of the rides are in the shade. The reserve is now $7.50 per person per night via an honesty box. The reserve is run by volunteers and the amenities are kept very clean

When: Friday 9th March to Monday 12th March.

Come and sing in with Leanne

    Rides:
    Basically, arrive Friday.

Saturday ride would be about 27 kms. Quiet country roads, bush tracks and through the pine forest to Stringybark Creek. The site where Ned Kelly and his gang killed 3 police officers. We will have lunch there. Toilets, picnic tables, memorials etc.

Sunday ride will be about 24 kms. Quiet country roads and bush tracks to blowfly hut which was built by some Vietnam Veterans. Gorgeous setting to have lunch by the creek which will be lovely to cool off if it's hot.

Monday might be an opportunity for anyone who wants to explore the local area before heading home. Mansfield had some interesting shops (particularly the saddlery) and Whitfield is only 27kms away and has great wineries.

I think we could plan on the pub Saturday night and maybe either a shared BBQ. For the Sunday night or everyone bring meal and we share that way.

Breakfast and saddlebag lunches would be riders responsibility to keep it all simple.

Conditions: The tracks are all undulating with no massive hills that I would imagine any horse with reasonable fitness would manage easily. Although we have to ride a bit on some country roads they are very quiet, we actually didn't see any other cars on them the whole weekend.

Bring: Tolmie is a great area if family want to join in and camp too, just let us know the numbers. Yards for your horses, feed (they’ll eat heaps and need plenty of hay so about ½ bale a day is usually needed), lunch for Saturday and Sunday rides, breakfast food, snacks, and something to share on Sunday night dinner. Speak to Leanne closer to the weekend about the food arrangements. Bring all your normal camping gear, a chair etc.

Nominations/RSVP: To Leanne ASAP on 0415 760 058. Please try and commit to attending the weekend if you nominate/RSVP.
