CALAJERO CAMP 2017 Monday 2nd to Saturday 7th October

  • Discription

“The Barn” at Calejero is situated on the Dargo Road on Iguana Creek (Glenaladale), about 30 minutes’ drive north east from Stratford, or north west from Bairnsdale. An easy to follow map is also provided, for those who intend travelling independently, but arrangements will be made to travel in convoy for those seeking security and company.

There is a well-equipped kitchen/lounge with cosy fire, (two large fridges). There is an undercover socialising area with cabins on the right, it is equipped with some comfy chairs, wood heater and wood fire pizza oven in background. The Barn has 8 rooms with sleeping accommodation for various numbers, and there are 5 bunks in a large dormitory type area above with room for swags. See the floorplan below for details.

Hopefully some members will use their floats, caravans or similar accommodation. The venue offers hot showers, full toilet facilities, fully equipped kitchen, safe paddocks for horses, and some yards; but I strongly suggest members bring their portable electric yards if they wish to keep their horse separate. Members should take all their food and drinks (for humans & horses) as the event is self-catering. Bairnsdale is only 30 minutes away and has a variety of shopping options. It may well be that arrangements can be made for a pizza night, so bring along suitable ingredients. There are good pubs at Lindenow and Briagolong if we choose to have a night out. Please also bring your own blankets, sheets, sleeping bags etc, to suit your personal requirements. It is hoped that a few members of the Yarram Club will join us so there is an opportunity to meet, socialise and establish new contacts and friends.

The floor plan opposite provides details of the various rooms, and the numbers they can accommodate. It is vital that we make efficient use of the available space, so bookings are essential.

    COSTS:

Adults $35 per person, per night, (includes riders and partners etc. alike); Children under 16 $20 per night (special discount for the club), preschoolers and HORSES are FREE.

Members may attend for all or as many days as they wish, but distance travelled really warrants staying as long as you can.

All bookings should be made to Alan Salter on 0427 357 941 or alg_salter@bigpond.com . I recommend that families or groups get together to work out compatibilities. There are 3 rooms with a double bed & 2 single beds; 1 with a queen bed; 1 with a single King; 1 with a double & single; 1 with a queen & 5 singles; and 1 with a queen, double & 3 singles. There are also 5 bunks and ample space for those with swags upstairs. Confirmation of payment of a $70 deposit (2 nights accommodation), is required before a booking will be confirmed. Payment should be made by EFT (direct deposit) into the

Ballarat Social Trail Horse Riders Club Bendigo Bank account, BSB & Account Number 633-000, 155 873 003.

Please quote your name and Cal17 as a reference.

It is proposed we travel in convoy, (for those who wish), leaving on Monday the 2nd October, in time to arrive at Calajero for a late lunch. Riders will have time to lunch and settle in, before a relaxing leisurely ride to let the horses wind down after their journey. Floating time is estimated at 5 to 6 hours at an easy pace, with a stop. Rides will be arranged daily, according to member preferences and skills, easy and not so easy, half or full day. Separate rides may be conducted simultaneously to cater for all. Participants may ride, or have a rest day as they wish, with plenty of non-horse riding activities in the offing for non-riding family and friends. Horses will require a degree of fitness and it is suggested that members start preparations/training now. This camp will provide an excellent lead up for the Landsborough Melbourne Cup weekend. It is important that you do not “overfeed” your horse with unnecessary hot feeds. Basic feed of chaff and Lucerne chaff with a cool supplement and good clean hay will be quite sufficient, and help prevent tying up and similar issues with your horse. I am available for advice on feeding and preparations if you wish. Horses will need to be shod, or at the very least well booted up because it is hard and stony under foot. Breastplates are essential as we will be riding in hilly terrain most of the time. This camp was set during the school holidays so that families can attend. Hope to see you all there.
