    Ride Description:

This is trail-riding at its best. Wonderful scenery as the ride takes in timbered slopes, frost hollows and sweeping plains, mountain tops, granite tors, and clear mountain creeks in fern filled gullies. Stunted snow gums to tall mountain ash, mountain pastures, snow grasses and much wildlife can be seen including herds of wild brumbies on Wild Horse and Boggy Plain. The ride’s highlights  include sweeping 360 degree views from the top of Mount Tantangara at 1744m and lunch at Tantangara Hut.

We will have a shorter loop ride to Gavel’s Hut on Sunday morning for those wanting to make the most of the weekend.

    Ride Difficulty:

Saturday (Mt Tantangara): Hard. Pace will be slow. Horses and riders need to be able to navigate safely through close timber, boggy creeks, muddy crossings, stoney slopes, & slippery tracks.

    Sunday : Moderate. Short ride.

    Ride Warnings/Alerts:

Narrow tracks, close timber, boggy creeks, muddy crossings, stony slopes, slippery tracks, steep climbs, wild horses & snakes. The area is remote and it will be difficult for riders to exit the ride once it begins, so riders and horses should be a confident team, fit and with good horsemanship skills.

    Grid/Map/GPS reference:

    Map 1 25:000 Tantangara

    Estimated Duration:

Saturday’s ride around Mt Tantangara will be about 7-8 hours (including stops ) and around 25 km.

Sunday morning’s ride will be about 2 hours.

    First Aid:

A basic first aid kit will be carried on the ride.

    Emergency Contact:

Mobile phone coverage is intermittent. Hand-held radios and PLB will be carried.

    Horse Fitness:

Horses must be fit for Saturday’s ride.  It is tough country with some long steep  climbs.

    Camp requirements:

Camp consists of two drop loos. You will need to bring your own electric fencing. Creek water is abundant.
BYO Drinking water and camp gear for yourself, including a chair to sit on.

Check the weather forecast before you come. It can get very cold at night with early frosts likely,  so bring wet weather and warm clothing & bedding, in case the weather changes for the worst.
Please bring a tarpaulin if you have one – it could be useful ! Wood should be brought in and not collected from the national park.

Please see  NSW National Park Kosciusko Riding Code for horses for more information

    Catering:

For the rides: BYO morning tea and lunch in saddlebags.

For the camp: BYO drinks and food for weekend. Also bring something to share with group like nibbles, a salad or cakes. We’ll have a BBQ on Saturday night.
    Bring your own drinking water.

    Equipment:

For ride, carry headstalls for tying or leading horses, saddlebags, rainwear, plus other equipment as required by each rider

For camp: Bring your own equipment for making an electric yard for your horse, horse feeding  & watering buckets, and your horse’s rug for the cold nights.

    Horse feed:

Please bring your own. All horse feed must be free of grain and weeds. That means No MEADOW hay! Ideally bring pellets and lucerne hay.

    Water Availability:

Dams and creeks on route. Bring extra water if conditions are dry.

    Horse Shoes:

It is recommended (but not essential) that horses are shod. Unshod horses should wear hoof-boots as track is very stony in places and it’s a long tough ride. If your horse becomes footsore, it is a problem that will spoil the ride for everyone.
