If your club is interested in hosting an accreditation weekend, please contact your Regional Manager; contact details can be found in the Home tab.

The Accreditation training team consists of: Pam Lamshed (NSW) and Bob Meuleners (QLD).  One of these trainers will be assigned to your weekend.

Thank you and congratulations to those ATHRA members and clubs who have put in the time and effort to further enhance the safety, welfare and enjoyment of horses and riders during ATHRA affiliated events.

Visit the Accreditation Register area for up to date listings of validated members.

Wagga AccreditationATHRA recognises that even though it is a national association of volunteers, there is a definite need for uniformity of process and rules when conducting a Trail Ride.

The Association also acknowledges its duty of care and with this in mind it jointly developed with its insurance partners Affinity Insurance Brokers an members' accreditation programme based on ATHRA's Code of Conduct.

The accreditation program is internal to ATHRA and is self managed.

Currently there are three recognised accredited positions: Trail Boss, Ride Cowra AccreditationCoordinator and Ride Steward.  Each position holds clearly defined responsibilities and elements.

The following information has been developed to assist clubs and their members in understanding ATHRA Accreditation process:

Participation in ATHRA's Accreditation program is not a daunting process and the aim is to educate individuals and to focus on risk management and safety for all.

  • All participants are taken through a training curriculum that addresses the inherent risks associated with Trail Riding and how to effectively manage them.  The Code of Conduct is used extensively as a reference source.

  • All participants who are actively involved throughout the duration of the course will receive certification as either a Trail Boss, Ride Coordinator or Ride Steward.

  • In order to obtain the Trail Boss certificate the following practical exercises must be undertaken and passed -

    • Ride and control a horse at a walk, trot and canter,
    • Open and close a gate either mounted or dismounted,
    • Mount and dismount a horse unassisted,
    • Lead a horse whilst mounted,
    • Lead a horse from the ground,
    • Correct and functional fit of tack and or equipment, and
    • Actively participate mounted in a simulated Trail Ride.

  • ATHRA strongly recommends that those seeking full Trail Boss certification bring a horse that is suitable for the practical components. A badly behaved or uncontrollable horse may affect your ability to pass aspects of the practical test.

  • Participants who do not pass all components of the practical assessments are not eligible for the Trail Boss classification, however they will still be eligible for Ride Coordinator and Ride Steward certification.

Clubs should ensure that members who are nominated to attend the accreditation course are aware of these criteria and are capable of managing the practical components.

Important information for accreditation course participants can be found in the  pdf IMS-GU-041 Accreditation Course Outline V20180207 (223 KB)

Additional information can be obtained from the Club's Regional Manager.

A well equipped First AiderATHRA's Code of Conduct was developed through a consultative process that included members of the Insurance Industry, ATHRA affiliated clubs and individual members.

Adherence to the Code aims to reduce the inherent risks associated with horse riding, and by joining the Australian Trail Horse Riders Assocation, all members agree to abide by this Code of Conduct.

The Code is reviewed annually to ensure it remains relevant and meets the evolving needs of the Association. Every ATHRA member is encouraged to become familiar with its content.

Each state has different incorporation requirements but they are all very similar. It is recommended that you follow the links below for the state you live in to ensure you follow the correct process:

New South Wales:

Northern Territory:

Queensland:

Victoria:

Western Australia:

Once you understand the legal requirements of starting an incorporated club you will then be required to complete the relevant affiliation form and club executive advice. The following are some general tips.in to ensure you follow the correct process:

  • advertise a public meeting in the local paper, produce shop or saddlery stating the intention of forming a trail horse riding club. You are welcome to contact a member of the ATHRA Executive to see if they could attend the meeting (or be available by phone at the time of the meeting to assist with queries).

  • at the meeting, which would be chaired by the convenor, explain the purpose of the meeting and the objectives of ATHRA.
  • move the following motions:

"That the ...................... Trail Horse Riders Club now be formed by the persons present. The name of the club can be as the meeting wishes - `Trail Horse Riders Club ' is only a suggestion).

"That the objectives of the club are to enjoy, promote and publicise the recreational values of horse riding along nature trails, and in furtherance of this object…..

Examples of other objects that could be used:

  • to organise trail rides in this or other districts
  • to encourage family participation in non-competitive horse riding
  • to foster awareness of the usefulness and abilities of the horse
  • to encourage horse riders in the protection and conservation of the natural Australian flora and fauna
  • to co-operate with others in the setting up and maintenance of trails
  • to foster in horse riders and Australians generally an awareness of road and other safety rules in regards to horse riding
  • to affiliate with the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association (ATHRA)
  • to assist ATHRA in the realization of its objects, and in particular with the maintenance of the Bicentennial National Trail
  • to work for the establishment, legislation and preservation of trails in the district, and support other organisations that focus on trails

As soon as possible after the meeting, the Secretary should advise the Association (via the membership registrar at ATHRA) of the formation of your club, providing the affiliation form, club executive advice and members' names and addresses, and arranging a direct deposit of the annual affiliation and membership fees.

Upon affiliation, the club is automatically covered by ATHRA's Public Liability insurance policy and Personal Accident insurance policy. This policy covers any official event organized by the club (eg, trail rides, social/fun days, meetings, etc). On receipt of the affiliation fee your club will be approved by the Board and affiliated with ATHRA.

The club will be set up on the ATHRA website with their own club page and will be required to set up the on-line membership component to allow automatic membership payments.

Once on-line membership is set up it provides fast and secure membership facilities and reduces the club membership processing paperwork.

QLDRe-affiliation with ATHRA becomes due on January 1st each year. The affiliation fees should be paid prior to the end of December to ensure that insurance cover is maintained. Any new membership or club joining after 1st October are current until the end of the following year.

ATHRA often has ‘early bird’ incentives for clubs to affiliate to assist with the volume of processing at this time of year. To receive this incentive each club is required to email their annual affiliation form, club executive contact and summary of events to the membership registrar and deposit that annual return fee into the association bank account by the required dates.

CowraThen welcome to ATHRA…... Come and Live Life Trail Riding!

It’s as easy as counting 123……

If you go to our club tab on the home page, click on your State and a list of clubs in your State will come up.  You can then scroll down and enter your postcode or continue scrolling to search for a club near you.

Click on the club and their contact details will appear – we encourage you to talk to the club to make sure that it will suit your needs.

Once you have spoken to the club and you feel satisfied this is the club for you then it’s a simple process of joining on line.

On the home page go to the membership tab, and on then the drop-down menu will appear for ‘New Membership Registration’. Click and follow the prompts. After completion you will receive an email confirming your membership.

We recommend you save a copy of this on your phone or print out a copy for your wallet.  This is your proof of membership and you will be asked to present this if you ride with another ATHRA club.

Once you join one ATHRA club you are able to ride with any other ATHRA affiliated club in the Nation!

You can even join two or more ATHRA clubs and only pay the ATHRA membership fee once.
