ATHRA: South Australia
History
ATHRA SA HISTORY to 2006
In 1975 a Councillor from ATHRA National, Danny Seymor contacted the Adelaide club requesting assistance to man a stall publicizing the association and trail riding in general at the Trade Fair being held in Adelaide.
Following this event there were protracted discussions with the National Trail body of trail riders concerning affiliation with them. This was to drag on for many months and in 1979 affiliation was finalised. Our first member to the National Council was Gary Ling in 1980.
ATHRA SA OBJECTS are:
To work for the encouragement of legislation to establish and preserve trails, and National Parks.
To encourage participation in non competitive horse riding.
To foster awareness in the usefulness and abilities of the horse
To encourage horse riders to love the outdoor life, and to protect the natural Australian flora and fauna.
To affiliate and assist the Australian Trail Horse Riders Association
ACHIEVEMENTS:
Our members researched and marked The Gold Escort Heritage Trail, a continuous 700 km trail from Castlemaine in Victoria to Mt Barker in SA, setting in place some 1,000 markers.
A marked trail in the Belair National Park was established.
The Kersbrook Horse Trail, which is 40 km of loop trails throughout the forest and on Council tracks.
Several trails on Willow Springs Station in the Flinders Ranges
And we are currently working with Horse SA on the Kidman Trail which starts at Willunga in the south and will reach Kapunda in time for the Kapunda Horse celebrations in 2007.
Maps for all these trails are available on the Horse SA website www.horsesa.asn.au.
Our history is marked by continuous involvement with Local Government and State Government in all areas of the provision of trails, horse keeping, land management, and horse legislation.
Safety is always a priority, and ATHRA's present Code of Conduct was adapted from an original compiled by SA.
